Want to take advantage of quantity discounts to feed your pets? Do you want to be prepared for changing weather and still be able to feed your animals? Buying crickets can save time and money! Here are some tips to maintain them in your home for up to three weeks at a time, escape free!

First, you’ll need a container. You’ll want to choose one large enough to allow for some space. Most losses are due to a tight environment and them walking all over each other. Also consider what size and how many you’ll want to keep at one time.  Large plastic critter keepers work well for about 100 large crickets. They are secure and have a ventilated lid. For larger sizes and quantities you’ll want to use an aquarium with a secure metal screen lid.

The bottom of your chosen critter cage should be lined with a thin layer of rabbit pellet food. This is inexpensive and absorbent. You then need to create a way for the crickets to climb. In the plastic critter cages, scoring the sides with sandpaper will create grooves that create a climbing surface. In a glass tank, cardboard egg cartons make for an easy climbing terrain. You will want to clean a replace the bedding and cartons every time you buy a new batch of crickets.

One more thing to remember:

Crickets are only as nutritious as the last meal they have eaten, so proper feeding is important.  Gut Load food in a small dish will keep them in tip top health. Crickets will drown in standing water, so they are given a gel water source instead. Even though the crickets are reptile food, you don’t want to lose them prematurely. Remember to change out the gel every few days. Both the food and water have extra calcium in them, so your pet gets a little vitamin boost with every bug he eats.

Keeping crickets at home is easy, and very convenient. You can expect to keep large crickets alive for shorter periods of time, and smaller sizes for a few weeks in this sort of setup. You’ll always have food ready for your pet, and be able to save when purchasing them in bulk.
