Patience and proper acclimation for the live rock are essential. Please read and understand all steps before beginning.
- 30-gallon plastic trash container (New, clean, well-rinsed)
- Submersible Aquarium Heater (50W should be fine)
- Water Pump
- Marine Test Kit
- Marine salt
The following steps must be followed as a condition of the PetSolutions Fourteen Day Live Guarantee.
STEP 1 Place rock in a container that contains saltwater mixed to a specific gravity of 1.024 and at a temperature of 75 to 79 degrees (F). Please make sure that all rock is completely submerged.
STEP 2 A water pump should be placed at the bottom of the container to keep water moving around the rock at all times.
STEP 3 The curing container should be left alone for three days. Do not put a cover on the container.
STEP 4 Remove as much water as possible (100% is okay.) Refill the container with newly mixed saltwater and continue the process for another four days.
STEP 5 At the end of the second four-day cycle, again replace as much of the saltwater as possible.
STEP 6 Wait 24 hours. Test for ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates.
STEP 7 If the ammonia level is at zero and both the nitrites are close to zero, the rock is cured and ready for use.
STEP 8 If the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels remain high, continue the curing process for another 4 days, change the saltwater and retest.
The length of time it will take rock to cure varies depending from where it was harvested as well as how well it was cleaned prior to shipment. Remember that after your rock is cured, it still houses huge number of critters as well as sponges algae and bacteria of nitrification. Over a period of roughly six months, the rock will begin to grow a colorful coat of coralline algae and add great beauty to your aquarium.
