Helpful Tips For Traveling With Your Dog
Looking for some helpful tips on how to easily incorporate your dog into your travel plans? When we decide we are going on a trip with our dogs, we immediately start planning on the preparations for the trip. This helps make our trip go as smoothly as possible. Here are some ideas, no matter if you are going on a vacation, visiting your family or just getting away for a long
weekend.
First, you need to check if your final designation is pet friendly, or, if you are visiting family, be sure to ask if it would be ok to bring your dog during the visit. Never surprise them because they might need to get some things prepared to become pet friendly.
You need to consider everything your dog will need for the entire trip. Whether you are driving or flying, bringing a crate, bed, blanket, dog food, food dishes and treats will ensure all these areas are covered. Additional things to pack could include grooming supplies, like his brush, shampoo and towel. You never know what grooming your pup might need when you are on your trip. Grooming items can come in travel sizes for more convenience, or you can get airline approved travel size containers to make flying a breeze. When flying, your crate has to be airline approved, whether your dog is sitting with you or flying in cargo.
Of course, your dog will need exercise and entertainment throughout the trip. Be sure to include his leash and poop bags for walks and toys to keep him entertained. Toys can also add comfort to your dog, since traveling can sometimes be stressful. When going by car, keep in mind you may need to make more stops for potty breaks, so this may add time to your drive.
We have actually pre-packed our dogs’ travel bags for all their dog supplies. That way, everything they need is ready to go and in one place. When we start running out of items in the pre-packed bags, we just replace them when needed so the bag is always ready. This makes planning a lot easier for those last minute trips. Since we can't always know what's going to happen during our trips, we bring our dogs’ first aid kit every time. That way, if anything does happen, we are ready.
Now, some places you travel to may not always have the right accommodations to fit your dog's needs. For example: if you are going to a big city or visiting someone who lives in an apartment, a yard or grassy area may not be readily available for potty breaks. An easy and convenient solution for this would be to bring wee wee pads. That way, potty breaks will never be an issue, no matter your destination. Nature’s Miracle cleaning items are always good to have on hand, too, for those little messes.
We try to keep theses tips in mind when planning our own trips with our dogs, and they have worked great for us. How you prepare will be determined by you, but when the preparation is done properly, traveling with your dog can be an experience that’s both relaxing and rewarding.
