Why Spaying Your Puppy is the Right Decision

Responsible pet ownership includes pet population control. We strongly recommend that everyone have their female puppies spayed. Along with the obvious benefit of eliminating unplanned breeding, there are a variety of very, very good reasons to have your veterinarian spay your new puppy.

Behavioral / Environmental advantages

  • No Attempts to Escape
During the heat cycle, your female may attempt to escape from your home or yard, putting her in danger of being hit by a car, getting lost, or fighting with other animals. Additionally, a female dog in heat will attract many males, which can cause problems around your home, as well. Male dogs marking territory and fighting for the chance to mate are just a couple of these potential problems.

Medical Advantages

  • Fewer Instances of Mammary Cancer
Mammary cancer is the most common malignant tumor in female dogs. Spaying a dog before her first heat cycle is the best way to reduce the chance of your female pup developing mammary cancer. Animals that are spayed prior to one year of age rarely develop this problem.
  • No Reproductive Tract Tumors
Tumors can develop in the uterus and ovaries. Spaying eliminates the possibility of these tumors, and associated medical problems, from developing.
  • No Uterine Infections
Many females develop a serious, and many times fatal, uterine infection called pyometra after a heat cycle. Spaying eliminates the possibility of this disease from developing.
  • Hair & Coat Problems
Hormone surges from the heat cycle can cause hair to thin and/or fall out in patches. Spaying eliminates these hormonal surges and eliminates this cause of a bad coat.

Contrary to popular belief, spaying does not make female pets fatter. What affects the weight and energy level of your pet is simply diet and exercise. Many pet owners tend to overfeed and/or spoil their female dogs with “treats.” This practice, combined with the lack of regular (daily) exercise, is what leads to unhealthy weight gain.

The simple fact is that spaying increases the lifespan of your female pup and increases the quality of life for her, as well.
