Do I Really Need a Quarantine Tank?

The short answer to, “Do I really need a quarantine tank?” is a resounding YES, especially if you have a large aquarium full of fish. While it may seem like a hassle to have a quarantine aquarium, it is much less a hassle than losing all your fish due to introducing something deadly to your current aquarium occupants.

Testing Out the New Eheim Power Algae Scraper

I placed the Eheim Power Algae Scraper base unit in the handle, turned it on, and started to push it straight down the glass, from the top to bottom. It powered its way through the algae in a single pass. I had to keep it at about a 30 degree angle, and it only seemed to work on a downward stroke, not when dragged “backward”. The blade pivots so you have a little margin of error as you press the blade against the glass. As I scraped away several week’s worth of algae, I could not help but be impressed with how well the Eheim Power Scraper was working.

What are UV Sterilizers?

UV sterilizers utilize a germicidal lamp emitting UV light inside of or over the top of a container with water. The water flows around/under the UV light and any bacteria or algae in the water will be killed by the exposure to the UV light. We use a measurement called a “kill dose” to determine if the UV will be strong enough to kill the organism we want killed. The kill dose relies on the wattage of the UV bulb, the flow rate of the water past the bulb, age of the bulb and the path the water takes.
