Seasonal changes and the Winter blues are equally challenging for humans and many animals. During the Winter months, less sun exposure causes us to adjust our schedules and adapt to darker days. Moving your bird cage close to a window is a great way to provide more natural light. This also helps prevent your bird from drastic mood changes when the days are darker and colder. Additionally, avian lights help many species stay healthy and happy during the Winter months.

Benefits of UVA/UVB Light

Avian lights help birds stay healthy while preventing any psychological disorders from developing. They are especially beneficial for exotic birds (like parrots) to get vitamin D during the Winter. Parrots have a uropygial gland, which is a gland at the base of the tail that produces oil. They spread this oil over their feathers when they preen. When this oil is exposed to UVA and UVB rays, naturally found through sunlight or artificially through avian lights, it converts to vitamin D3 and is ingested when the bird continues preening.

Some animals enjoy sitting on the floor in front of windows to absorb the warm, exposed areas of sunlight. Dogs and cats enjoy the warmth and can sit directly in the sunlight for extended periods of time if they want to. For birds, too much heat is actually harmful for them. Placing the cage near, but not directly in front of a window helps them absorb UVA and UVB rays without overexposing them to heat.

Lastly, birds display other signs of the Winter blues that you can look out for. Notice if they become overly picky or uninterested in food, stop playing with toys, or starting plucking their feathers too much. Give your bird the full spectrum of UVA/UVB needed to maintain its normal behavior and overall well-being!
